Gay Barbenheimer: Girls Like Girls and Leviticus Double Feature

It’s almost time. Tomorrow I'm finally going to see gay barbenheimer, and I couldn’t be more excited. If you’re familiar with the social phenomenon of barbenheimer then you know the appeal to this kind of double feature is the stark contrast between the films. Barbie is bright pink and fun while Oppenheimer is dark and gritty. This juxtaposition makes for the perfect double feature, and finally us queers have one of our own. Girls Like Girls is a coming of age romance involving a wlw relationship while Leviticus is a supernatural horror film that involves a mlm relationship. Polar opposite films with queerness being the only thread connecting them.
This is going to bring great exposure for both films, which is especially exciting for Girls Like Girls directed by Hayley Kiyoko because as we know wlw films have a more difficult time gaining popularity than horror films and mlm films. I expect Leviticus to do well simply because horror is huge right now and everyone loves a summer horror film- the gay relationship just sweetens the deal for me and will probably surprise those going to the theatre to just see a horror film. I’m excited for both of course, so the real question is what order do I watch them in?
I’ve already got my tickets booked with my AMC A-List subscription and I chose Girls Like Girls first as a warm and sweet appetizer then I’m going to end the night with Leviticus as the final course because horror tends to put a damper on the vibes and linger a bit longer. I’m most excited for Girls Like Girls because I’m a lesbian and Kiyoko’s song Girls Like Girls was a foundation song for many queer girls like myself. I want to revel in those coming of age, nostalgic vibes and hopefully not have my heart broken during this first film. I really need this film to have a happy ending; I can’t emotionally handle a sad ending then immediately have to go to Leviticus.
I expect Leviticus which is an Australian film to subvert my expectations for supernatural horror which will more than likely leave me with something to digest for a bit after. Queer horror is my favorite genre so I am super excited to finally be seeing this film. Rather than be sitting in Girls Like Girls with lingering questions about Leviticus I’d rather just have a fresh mind for the more light-hearted film.
From what I’ve heard, Leviticus doesn’t skimp out on the sexual tension and sexual scenes which would make the slow burn, soft tension of blooming lesbianism pale in comparison to the intensity that Leviticus promises. I’m extremely excited for both and feel blessed to have a queer Barbenheimer during Pride month especially. Follow my lead and start with Girls Like Girls then end the night with Leviticus. This will give you the perfect Friday evening without regret of choosing the wrong film to watch first. Who’s excited??
