REVIEW: Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Wow, Jane Schoenbrun thank you for your service. Lesbians rejoice, the Gillian Anderson girl-kisser agenda is alive and well in Schoenbrun’s new sensual meta-slasher, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. I had the opportunity to see this film in June at the Provincetown International Film Festival followed by a Q&A with Schoenbrun. It was phenomenal and even better than their last film, I Saw The TV Glow, which is saying something because that film is so incredible. Now, after my second watch, I’m finally prepared to discuss this film more in-depth. 

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is a beautiful and bloody deconstruction of the slasher genre that both addresses its failings and overflows with love for the best parts of the genre. The film is sensual, teeming with nostalgia, and all around a fun time. Flesh and fluids forever!

We get to see Gillian Anderson reprise her best Blanche Dubois accent but with a more fabulous and campy demeanor. She plays Billy with an understated flair and mania that really brings the reclusive character to life. Billy is both an ominous force and a pulse of sensuous energy. Genuine to the bone. Anderson was a great pick for this role for many reasons, but my suspicion is that Schoenbrun was a big X Files fan. As am I. 

Our other leading lady, Hannah Einbinder is emotionally raw, open, and humorous in her portrayal of Kris. She embodies Kris with a clumsy sort of internal chaos and curiosity in a way that fluctuates from campy to conserved. It’s really outstanding to watch Einbinder sell this role with such sincerity.  

The film has a sapphic color scheme that blends pinks and oranges with cold elements of blue and stark winter whites. It works so well with the juxtaposition of a summer camp setting in a frigid winter. Of course this doesn’t last once our final girls start heating things up. The old-school painted backdrops and the concept of seeking out the OG final girl of Camp Miasma throws you into a nostalgic space where past and present blur together. This sets the tone for Kris to find a comfortable space for intimacy in the midst of finding herself and her story.

It would be remiss to not mention one of my favorite scenes in the film which features Jack Haven as Little Death. We see Little Death begin to rise from the lake in a Cronenberg-esque manner and go on a bloody killing spree through the original Camp Miasma set to the song A Long December by Counting Crows. The incredible POV shots and disorienting body mounted shots in addition to the music puts you in a place to empathize with the foggy haze of Little Death’s necessary terror. 

Speaking of this needle-drop moment, the entire score by Alex G is perfection. He curated the music as well as made his own for the soundtrack. His original work brings back the synthy nostalgia of 70’s and 80’s slasher films. In addition to songs like A Long December by Counting Crows, he has hits by Sade, Gerard Way, and more. This is Alex G’s third time doing music for Schoenbrun’s features and it’s clear why they continue to work together. Their vibes mesh perfectly and has made their films all the more iconic. 

Teenage Sex and Deatbh at Camp Miasma is nostalgic, sensual, fun, and overall a bloody good time. Flesh and fluids define the slasher genre and Schoenbrun’s breakdown and reconstruction of it is perfection.
